A recent report published in ACS’ journal Environmental Science & Technology described a possible link between the use of sunscreens containing Benzophenone (BP)-type UV filters and heightened endometriosis risk.
Many sunscreens and other personal care products contain BPs. These types of ingredients are very effective in blocking potentially harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun but when absorbed into the blood, they mimic the effects of the hormone estrogen which increases a woman’s chance of developing endometriosis. Endometriosis affects up to 1-in-10 women of reproductive age.
The scientists found particularly high levels of one BP called 2,4OH-BP associated with an increased risk of an endometriosis diagnosis.
