Magnesium may be our most important and most necessary nutrient.
The World Health Organization says, “Low magnesium status has been implicated in hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and the metabolic syndrome,” ( See Clinical Pearl on Mg and blood pressure) while ~ 80 percent of Americans are deficient in the mineral. In fact, magnesium levels in food have been declining for the past 60 years because of intensive, high-yield farming practices and synthetic fertilizers that can dilute concentrations of nutrients, including magnesium, according to a study published in Nutrition and Health in 2007, as well as others.
Though the National Institutes of Health recommends daily Mg consumption of 420 milligrams for men and 320 milligrams for adult women, intake of 700 milligrams daily, and more when necessary, is often suggested. Unfortunately, these levels are difficult to get through diet because of soil that is depleted of magnesium. Other factors reduce magnesium stores in the body including prescribed drugs for acid reflux, statins, and blood pressure medications and drugs containing fluoride.
Magnesium and pH
Our bodies function best in an alkaline pH and magnesium is one of the main minerals that neutralize the metabolic acid production in the body – contributing to the optimum acid alkaline balance. Interestingly, the body needs energy to absorb magnesium, so those who need it the most, can sometimes be the ones with the greatest magnesium absorption issues. Fortunately PERQUE Choline Citrate can help maximize magnesium absorption when used along with PERQUE Mg Plus Guard (Read Mg and Choline Study).
Using PERQUE Mg Plus Guard & PERQUE Choline Citrate together, and maintaining the 1st AM urine pH between 6.5-7.5 can help monitor acid alkaline balance and optimize health.
