Microflora for a Healthy Gut

In Beauty, Energy, Uncategorized by admin

Beneficial bacteria in the gut (probiotics) are crucial to optimal health. Not only do probiotics promote healthy digestion, but also boost the immune system. Probiotics have been cited in more than 200 studies to help manage in excess of 170 types of health conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Atopic Dermatitis, Diarrhea and Allergic Rhinitis to name a few. In addition, a healthy supply of good bacteria can crowd out the pathogenic and harmful bacteria and yeasts, reducing chances of infection and inflammation.

Microflora and obesity

In a recent study published in the Archives of Childhood Diseases, just under  16% of children delivered via Caesarean section were obese by the age of 3, compared with 7.5% of those born vaginally. Children delivered by Caesarean section also had higher BMI and skinfold thickness measurements. The difference in the composition of gut bacteria acquired at birth between the two delivery methods could be a big reason for this.

Children born by Cesarean section have higher numbers of Firmicutes bacteria as seen in obese individuals as well. Gut bacteria influence the development of obesity by increasing energy extracted from the diet, and by stimulating cells to boost insulin resistance, inflammation, and fat deposits.
